چکیده
Abstract Intermittent streams that periodically cease surface flow have long been understudied in ecology and underrepresented conservation policy. However, they currently account for 30–50% of the global river network, number is rising due to anthropogenic water extraction, land-use change, climate change. We explored Coleoptera biodiversity south Pacific coast region British Columbia, Canada, using pitfall traps at perennial naturally intermittent stream reaches, shoreline, dry streambed, riparian habitats, both flowing (spring early summer) nonflowing (late phases. found habitats around reaches had significantly greater abundance individuals than did those reaches. neither habitat type nor regime was a significant predictor taxon richness, sites featured unique taxa were not near streams. This aligns with recent results from other taxonomic groups; is, finding ecosystems can host high diversity Coleoptera, on par or even Because will likely become more prevalent within better understanding how different species use these needed inform appropriate efforts management.

Salmonids and the Hydrologic and Geomorphic Features of Their Spawning Streams in British Columbia
The objective of this chapter is to describe some key linkages between the ecology of salmonid fish and the hydrologic and geomorphic features of their spawning streams in British Columbia. Salmonid refers to all species in the Salmonidae family of fishes, which includes Pacific salmon and trout (Oncorhynchus spp.), char (Salvelinus spp.), grayling (Thymallus spp.), whitefish and cisco (Coregon...
متن کاملIncome inequality and health. Coastal communities in British Columbia, Canada.
OBJECTIVE An imbalance in the distribution of economic resources, i.e., income inequality, is a characteristic of a community that may influence the aggregate health of the population. In North America, income inequality seems to be strongly related to mortality rates among American communities such as states and metropolitan areas but largely irrelevant for health at similar levels of geopolit...
متن کاملLow incidence of schizophrenia in British Columbia coastal Indians.
Schizophrenia rates were obtained from a British Columbia coastal Indian group numbering 14 000. One subgroup numbering 12 200 showed an incidence of 10 cases per 100 000 population a year. An atypical subgroup of 1800 showed an incidence of 49 cases per 100 000 a year. These rates appear to be relevant to a hypothesis that suggests that schizophrenia may be caused by abnormal fatty acid metabo...

Between 1 January, 1995 and 6 September, 1995, there have been 110 acute Toxoplasma gondii infections identified among individuals in the Greater Victoria area. Of these, 42 infected women and 11 newborns have been identified through a pregnancy-related screening program, which began on 24 April, 1995. Fifty-seven infections have been identified in non-pregnant individuals. This outbreak of tox...
